Amelia's Next StepAs most of you are aware WAG coach Janie Ahlstrom's (who has coached at Knox Gymnastics, VHPC and is now at Waverley Gymnastics Centre) then 5 yr old daughter Amelia was in a tragic accident in 2011 where she suffered third degree burns to 40% of her body. Dear Gymnastics Community, As most of you are aware WAG coach Janie Ahlstrom’s (who has coached at Knox Gymnastics, VHPC and is now at Waverley Gymnastics Centre) then 5 yr old daughter Amelia was in a tragic accident in 2011 where she suffered third degree burns to 40% of her body. Amelia spent over four months in the Royal Childrens Hospital in Melbourne. During this time she underwent more than 20 operations for skin grafting. Whilst in Intensive Care Amelia’s trachea was severely damaged and she had to have a tracheostomy tube inserted into her throat. She still has this today. This means that Amelia still has no voice and cannot breathe without it. So far operation to remove the tracheostomy has failed. There is an expert surgeon in Switzerland who can perform a surgery not available in Australia, but the cost of the operation is $90,000, that the Ahlstrom family need to pay for themselves. Please find below a link to Amelia’s ‘operation fundraising page’ with a special video of Amelia’s journey. https://fundrazr.com/campaigns/fVLx7? The gymnastics community has already been incredible generous and to all those if you who already kindly contributed thank you sincerely and if you could consider forwarding this on to others that you know it would be very much appreciated. Our sincerest thankyou to everyone that has sent their best wishes and support. We are hopeful that Amelia will be able to talk again! Alternatively an account has been set up for the operation.

GV2U - Staff Volunteer ProgramGymnastics Victoria is extremely proud to be able to offer its staff volunteer initiative designed to further support affiliated Victorian gymnastics clubs. GV office staff will each volunteer one full day a year to work within affiliated clubs. One Day, One Team Clubs will have the opportunity to nominate themselves by completing a GV Volunteer Expression of Interest Form (EOI) and submitting it to the GV office.
Please indicate in your EOI, which staff member you would prefer and what tasks you would like them to do. If your club is selected details will be directly negotiated between the club and nominated staff member.
The volunteer initiative will have mutual benefits for both affiliated clubs and GV staff. Clubs will be able to utilize volunteer hours, address specific issues through specialist staff and better represent their club and its needs. GV staff will gain a further appreciation of the operating environment within affiliated clubs and the current fantastic work dedicated gymnastics volunteers do within Victoria. Both parties will also be able to further build relationships. What a great way to get to know GV staff and for GV to understand your club.
The release of this initiative was timed to coincide with the National Volunteers Week (May 2011); a celebration of the dedication of the many wonderful people who give of their time to enhance the community. Sport in particular is very reliant on volunteers and would significantly struggle without them.
The GV staff are excited and committed to this initiative and the potential positive outcomes, and hope that clubs embrace this opportunity also. So get creative and think of how your club may benefit.
Please complete the attached form and submit to Kristian Brudenell, Club Services Manager.
