Around the Grounds - WAG Trial 1

Meagan Silvers, Monday, 20 May 2013

Today 'Around the Grounds' travels to Maffra for the WAG State Team Trial 1

On the last balmy days before the winters cold overtakes our state, Victorian WAG gymnasts were competing on the first of two days of competition in Maffra to represent their state at Australian Championships.

Trial one is the first of two trials where National 7-10 athletes compete in order to earn a spot to represent Victoria - an ongoing goal for many athletes. It was great to be a part of the atmosphere and see many athletes picking up the pace and continuing to up the ante, in order to create a strong team image. The dynamics are already starting to build with athletes from all clubs showing support of their fellow competitors and teammates.

Thank-you to the Maffra club members and volunteers, for conducting and managing the competition. The GV panel and judges, for their assistance and support in the lead up for Australian Championships and of course thanks to the coaches and their athletes for bringing their ‘A Game’. Keep working hard and Good Luck for Trial 2!

This 'Around the Grounds' report was brought to you by Meagan Silvers (Level 10 MLC)

Amelia's Next Step

Waverley Gymnastics Centre, Wednesday, 8 May 2013

As most of you are aware WAG coach Janie Ahlstrom's (who has coached at Knox Gymnastics, VHPC and is now at Waverley Gymnastics Centre) then 5 yr old daughter Amelia was in a tragic accident in 2011 where she suffered third degree burns to 40% of her body.

Dear Gymnastics Community,

As most of you are aware WAG coach Janie Ahlstrom’s (who has coached at Knox Gymnastics, VHPC and is now at Waverley Gymnastics Centre) then 5 yr old daughter Amelia was in a tragic accident in 2011 where she suffered third degree burns to 40% of her body. Amelia spent over four months in the Royal Childrens Hospital in Melbourne. During this time she underwent more than 20 operations for skin grafting. Whilst in Intensive Care Amelia’s trachea was severely damaged and she had to have a tracheostomy tube inserted into her throat. She still has this today.

This means that Amelia still has no voice and cannot breathe without it. So far operation to remove the tracheostomy has failed. There is an expert surgeon in Switzerland who can perform a surgery not available in Australia, but the cost of the operation is $90,000, that the Ahlstrom family need to pay for themselves. Please find below a link to Amelia’s ‘operation fundraising page’ with a special video of Amelia’s journey.   https://fundrazr.com/campaigns/fVLx7?

The gymnastics community has already been incredible generous and to all those if you who already kindly contributed thank you sincerely and if you could consider forwarding this on to others that you know it would be very much appreciated. Our sincerest thankyou to everyone that has sent their best wishes and support. We are hopeful that Amelia will be able to talk again!

Alternatively an account has been set up for the operation.

Around The Grounds - State Team Trials and Qualifiers

Development Team, Wednesday, 8 May 2013

Let's take a quick fly around to find out all the news from the latest State team Trials and Qualifiers

Rhythmic Gymnastics
Trial 1 for Rhythmic Gymnasts started with the judges arriving at the same time as gymnasts and while the gymnasts were warming up, the judges had a one hour update (could be described as warm up for judges).
The competition started with levels gymnasts, many still adjusting to the requirements of the new code, and then continued on with the higher levels, where some clever choreography showed some gymnasts as potential stars.

Then it was time for our young competitors, and it was truly awesome seeing what these young girls can manage in one minute thirty; risk--mastery--body skills, and well executed  exactly to the music.

Numbers in Rhythmic are growing with over 30 girls trialling at this event and it is certainly worth coming along to watch the growing beauty that is evolving in this sport.

Acrobatic Gymnastics
Acrobatics Gymnastics is well underway for 2013! Athletes have already participated in Trial One, where some fantastic results were seen and it was clear to see many groups had placed a big focus on the changes made to artistry under the new code of points.

Athletes also had the opportunity to participate in an assessment camp earlier this year, which was aimed at bringing athletes from different clubs together before state team selection and also introduce the changes brought in under the new code of points.

Many groups have performed fantastically so far this year and are in a good spot heading into state team selection and Australian Championships.

Trampoline Sports
The third Victorian Trampoline Sports inter club competition was held on Sunday May 5 at Omega Trampoline Sports Club, at Carrington Park Leisure Centre, Knoxfield.

Once again this event was a qualifying competition for the Australian Championships and we saw a number of athletes attain qualifying scores in the age and elite competition. There were some outstanding trampoline routines and double mini trampoline passes on the day, but the highlight was undoubtedly Ryan Hatfield's double mini trampoline passes. Videos of Ryan's passes (Pass 1: Half Out Pike, Half In Rudi Out Pike Pass 2: Half Out Tuck, Full Full Straight) can be viewed on the Victorian Trampoline Sports Facebook page.

In the Levels competition it was fantastic to see such a high number of athletes. In particular we were thrilled to see EKGA attend their first trampoline competition of the year. Thank you to everyone who was involved in the day. In particular, thank you to Omega for running such an excellent event.

GV2U - Staff Volunteer Program

Monday, 6 June 2011

Gymnastics Victoria is extremely proud to be able to offer its staff volunteer initiative designed to further support affiliated Victorian gymnastics clubs. GV office staff will each volunteer one full day a year to work within affiliated clubs.

One Day, One Team

Clubs will have the opportunity to nominate themselves by completing a GV Volunteer Expression of Interest Form (EOI) and submitting it to the GV office.

Please indicate in your EOI, which staff member you would prefer and what tasks you would like them to do. If your club is selected details will be directly negotiated between the club and nominated staff member.

The volunteer initiative will have mutual benefits for both affiliated clubs and GV staff. Clubs will be able to utilize volunteer hours, address specific issues through specialist staff and better represent their club and its needs. GV staff will gain a further appreciation of the operating environment within affiliated clubs and the current fantastic work dedicated gymnastics volunteers do within Victoria. Both parties will also be able to further build relationships. What a great way to get to know GV staff and for GV to understand your club.

The release of this initiative was timed to coincide with the National Volunteers Week (May 2011); a celebration of the dedication of the many wonderful people who give of their time to enhance the community. Sport in particular is very reliant on volunteers and would significantly struggle without them.

The GV staff are excited and committed to this initiative and the potential positive outcomes, and hope that clubs embrace this opportunity also. So get creative and think of how your club may benefit.

Please complete the attached form and submit to Kristian Brudenell, Club Services Manager.
