Gymnastics Victoria Hosts Victoria University Student
From Wednesday 6 November to Friday 15 November, Gymnastics Victoria were pleased to welcome Chelsea to our office to complete her university work placement.
Chelsea has recently completed her Certificate I in Work Education (Sport) at Victoria University Polytechnic, a course specifically designed for people with an intellectual disability to help them gain employment in the sports industry.
While at Gymnastics Victoria, Chelsea worked closely with April, our Inclusion and Programs Manager.
During her placement, Chelsea volunteered at Moving Monkeys Gymnastics Club in Ferntree Gully where she helped coach Kindergym.
Chelsea, who has participated in gymnastics in the past, was able to draw on the skills she had previously learnt to help the Kindergym participants.
“Coaching at Moving Monkeys has been a lot of fun because the kids engaged with me very well and I’ve been able to implement what I know from my years in gymnastics and bring it to the Kindergym program,” Chelsea said.
Chelsea dreams of one day coaching children with a disability.
“My dream is to become a sports coach for athletes with disabilities, specialising in swimming or track and field,” Chelsea said.
Chelsea enjoyed her work placement at Gymnastics Victoria and has gained a “behind the scenes” insight into how major sports are run.
“I will definitely take away a better understanding and appreciation for all the people who run major sports, not just in Victoria, but in Australia as well. I hope to be given the chance to volunteer at competitions in the future,” she said.
Reflecting on her time working alongside April and the Gymnastics Victoria team, Chelsea said she really valued the experience.
“I’m very passionate about disability in sport so having the chance to share my experiences with everyone has been extremely rewarding,” she said.
Gymnastics Victoria would like to thank Chelsea for her hard work and effort throughout her work placement. We look forward to supporting more students in future!
