Gymnastics is Rolling Out Inclusion

Ruby at BTYC
Membership & Development, Friday, 18 May 2012

One of Gymnastics Victoria's 104 affiliated clubs, BTYC Gymnastics located in Doncaster East, has recently supported Ruby Francis (3yrs old) to be integrated into a gymnastics class. Ruby has Cerebral Palsy, a physical condition primarily affecting movement in over 33,000 Australians. Over the past 6 weeks Ruby has been participating in a Kindergym class that targets fundamental movement and skill development.

Gymnastics Victoria has recently partnered with VicHealth to increase the inclusion of people with a disability into the Gymnastics Community. Gymnastics Victoria is committed to addressing the lack of physical activity experienced by many people with a disability through active participation in gymnastics.  A 2010 study by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare showed 43% of adults with a profound disability (i.e. those with high support needs) reported very low or no exercise in daily life. Developing leaders with a disability, researching the benefits of gymnastics for people with a disability and developing ‘best practice’ inclusion clubs are other key areas of focus.

Ruby’s mother Jackie has noticed improvements in Ruby’s core strength, balance and coordination “Ruby is steadier and in more control of her movements, she is now able to climb the stairs at home without using her hands”. Describing the Kindergym class Jackie says “it’s nice not worrying about her safety because everything is soft and padded. As a parent I enjoy it because I know I am supporting my daughter to do something great for her physical development and her wellbeing”.

“The coaches make sure Ruby is not excluded from any activities and have been great in supporting her to increase her skills.” Ruby’s coaches have also noticed that her balance and strength have improved and she is trying more activities each week. They comment “Gymnastics provides a great opportunity for people with a disability to challenge themselves, get physically active and have fun whilst improving their balance, strength and flexibility.” Gymnastics is a fantastic activity for anyone who would like to improve the fundamental control whilst having fun and making links with their local community. Gymnastics Victoria are working closely with Scope, VicHealth, Special Olympics Victoria, Vicsrapid, Vicsport and Sport and Recreation Victoria and are currently seeking more participants with a disability.
