Vic Gymnasts Learn To Fly

Development Team, Friday, 18 May 2012

Two young Victorian gymnasts join the AIS world cup athletes for an international training camp.

Alice Cheung (ex Niddrie gymnast) and Nicolette Barnett (ex VIS HPC gymnast) have been invited to attend a training camp with 5 world cup AIS/VIS aerial skiing athletes in Utah USA. Both girls have recently performed their first single back layouts on the water jump in Wandin after learning to ski in the VIS Aerial Skiing Development Program. Alice and Nicolette have been working on their skiing skills for the past 24 months both at Mt Buller and overseas in Snowbasin USA .  They are both excited about the future with their sights now set on landing their first back layouts on snow later in the year.

The girls will be  joining  other ex-gymnasts including Olympic gold medallist and new mother Lydia Lassila (ex Niddrie gymnast) who has returned to full time training with the goal of a repeat performance in Sochi at the 2014 winter Olympics.  All the athletes and staff are eagerly awaiting the opening of our new world class water jump training facility in Brisbane later this year. This will mean the athletes can train here in Australia year round giving Australia the advantage of being able to transition from training on water to training on snow within days, without having to fly overseas.
